Welcome to the Effingham Church of Christ!

Our Story

The church of Christ in Effingham, Illinois is the result of the coming together of Christians in the year 1945. The work began with several Christian families who had moved to the Effingham area during the oil boom of the late 1930s and early 1940s. The church first met in the homes of some of those members.

From 1946 to 1952, the congregation met in a rented hall. In these years, several gospel meetings were held in school buildings and under a large tent. in 1951, the construction of a meetinghouse was begun at the corner of South Fourth Street and Wernsing Avenue, and it was completed in June, 1952. The first service in the new building was conducted July 6, 1952. In the past three-quarters of a century, the church has been served by many faithful gospel preachers, elders, and deacons. Renovations and enlargements of the meeting house have been accomplished.

For decades, the Effingham church has supported the work of Shults-Lewis Children's Home. Other works supported in recent times include Exhibit Evangelism at the Illinois State Fair, the Latin American Missions, and Twenty-First Century Global Missions. A weekly Sunday morning radio broadcast is conducted by the present preacher, Tom McLemore.

The Effingham church is committed to promoting and practicing Christianity. If one visits the Effingham church's assembly, one finds one's self among people who are striving to please God by loving his Son Jesus Christ and one another while worshiping and serving according to the teaching of the Holy Scriptures.

The brethren in Effingham are grateful that the Lord has so richly blessed the congregation and has enabled them to serve the surrounding areas and to support the work of the gospel and benevolence in other places.
